The advantage of surprise was slipping away. Roberto knew that Carlos was getting organized. Finally, a volley of shots was fired into the bush dangerously close to his prone body. He shouted at Adam, who was already up and running. To add to the confusion, Roberto sent a few more rounds back toward the ranch house as they ran, tripping and stumbling, back to the path. He wanted to keep shooting, but they needed to put distance between them and their pursuers. Adam found the path and ran. Roberto was not far behind.

 

They heard more shouting and wild shooting into the brush. Carlos could be heard ordering his men to give chase. The shots being fired were farther and farther away. Carlos’ soldiers were afraid to come into the brush, but it wouldn’t take long for Carlos to think about cutting off their escape by blocking the road to the ancient ruin.
